Angel Ziegler, Registered Nurse
What is a parish nurse? A parish nurse is a health educator, health promoter, and personal health counselor. Parish nurses reinforce the close relationship between faith and health. A parish nurse embraces the theology of caring for the whole person in mind, body, and spirit. A parish nurse takes the time to listen, to counsel, to care, and to pray with people in need. Why have a parish nurse? When nursing first began, it had strong ties to the church. For centuries, religion and nursing went hand and hand. Resent studies show that religious people live longer than non-religious people. Facts like this have led to a renewed passion for nurses to assist in the spiritual needs of people. Nursing has always been encouraged to look at the whole patient, not just their current illness. In holistic medicine, both mind and body are treated. The church cares about people their entire lives. A regular opportunity for building friendships, for prayer, for praise and worship, and for service to others, all helps to create an attitude of thankfulness and hope that contributes to a person's total health. The church is a source of weekly motivation to help people put body, mind, and spirit together, and to convince them that the integration of all three can lead to true health and wholeness.
When Jesus had called the twelve together, he gave them power and authority to cure disease, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Luke 9:1-2 |
