History of The First United Methodist Church of Reddick
The history of the congregation now know as The First United Methodist Church of Reddick began in 1876 when Rev. J.C. Ley, a Methodist circuit rider based in Gainesville, began to hold services in a small chapel on one acre of land at Millwood donated by a local land owner, Col. S.W. Owens, for the church and cemetery. In 1891, the decision was taken to relocate the congregation in "downtown" Reddick, and the present sanctuary was erected on the present site, where the first service was held on September 11, 1892. The Sunday nearest to that date is now observed each year as the anniversary of the church, and every fifth year as homecoming. Known originally as the Pierce Chapel, the church became The First United Methodist Church following the merger in 1968 at the national level of the (former) Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches to form the (new) United Methodist Church. As the History of the church is researched further and assembled it will be added to this site.
